This introductory course provides students with a foundational understanding of traditional Japanese staff arts with a primary focus on Aikijo, the staff practices associated with the martial art of Aikido. Designed for beginners, the course introduces the relationship between staff movement, body alignment, timing, distance, and awareness while emphasizing safety, discipline, and traditional martial arts etiquette.
Students will learn how Aikijo develops coordination, posture, balance, and fluid movement through structured solo and partner exercises using the jo, a walking staff/stick. The course also explores the historical and philosophical connections between Japanese weapons training and modern Aikido practices.
