This family-friendly course is designed for the absolute beginner interested in learning to fish. We will focus on using basic spinning reels and rods to fish the Reno-Sparks area waters as well as rivers, streams and lakes in Western Nevada. The course will cover Nevada fishing regulations and fish species, what equipment to buy (and not to buy) and how to use it, how, when, and where to fish, safety, environmental stewardship, and both catch-and-release and harvesting fish for consumption. Hands-on practice will include mastering basic fishing knots, selecting and attaching line, how reels and rods work, casting practice, selection and demonstration of lures, common tackle and rigs, and handling and landing fish.
Students do not need to purchase any fishing equipment or licenses before class, making it easy to dive right in! If you already have fishing gear, you are welcome to bring it to class if you have questions about it.
This immersive class features three hands-on interactive sessions and an optional private two-hour fishing experience to be used within the year. Bring the whole family—children ages 10 and up are welcome with a family member. Reel in the joy of fishing and create memories to last a lifetime!
