Trail Fundamentals Certificate: Essentials of Trail Maintenance

Discover how to care for the trails you love while building practical, in-demand skills. This certificate introduces participants to the essentials of trail maintenance through a blend of online learning and hands-on field experience. You’ll learn safe tool use, sustainable practices, and proven techniques used to preserve and improve existing trails.

Trails are more than recreational spaces; they support our local economy, promote health and well-being, and protect natural environments. As outdoor recreation continues to grow in the Reno/Tahoe region, the need for sustainable trail care is more important than ever. This course helps fill a local training gap by providing foundational skills for volunteers, outdoor enthusiasts, and those considering future work in recreation or conservation.

Hands-on training takes place at Sky Tavern.

Whether you want to give back to the trails you enjoy, build new skills, or explore future opportunities in trail and recreation work, this course offers a practical and meaningful starting point.

Minimum age: 16 years old

Course Includes:

• A 90-minute online asynchronous eCourse to be completed before the in-person training (access code will be sent in advance)
• 6 hours of hands-on trail training
• Transportation provided (meet at Meadowood Center)
• Tools and PPE provided for duration of time on trail

What to Bring & Wear
This class is held outdoors. Dress for the weather and bring: Long pants and closed-toe shoes, layers, sun protection, refillable water bottle, gloves, snacks, and a sack lunch.
