The Golden Age of Mysteries: 1930's and 1940's

« back to classes page
CourseGraphic This noir period produced some of the best mystery and crime novels.  Most mystery fans know of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, but many other writers contributed to the noir period.  For example, Cornell Woolrich, little known today, was a master of suspense.  He wrote Rear Window and more than 20 mystery and suspense novels, nearly all of which were made into movies.  Noir was a break from the slow-moving British mysteries of the period.  Murders didn't happen off stage.  The stories were gritty harbingers of today's crime fiction and movies.
